Loki’s Identity Crisis
After more than a half a year studying and writing, I’ve managed to take things and smooth some of it out into my first article. And then I realized… there’s no one to submit it to.
I don’t like using too many fifty cent words. (These days it’s probably $100 a word because of inflation.) I don’t like being too reverent, I don’t like beating around the bush to get my point across when it comes to some information. I speak in poetry – that’s the skald/bard/skot in me. And I came to a conclusion no one else has come to while wondering why no one else sees it. It’s so freaking obvious, and judging by what I’ve read there were others who saw it as well. It’s just we forgot.
Of course I reached out to here and there. Idunn (The Troth) was sent an early copy, but I’m not holding my breath. Loki University’s website is beautiful, but there’s no way to simply make an inquiry. Heathenry: The International Journal for Heathen Research? Yes I sent them an email basically asking, would anyone like to read this? Just to read it? Yeah I need to make a living, but… this was a labor of love. For him. MY him, and I’ll write posts about that later. For now, this article is the thing.
I will go ahead and give you a spoiler: save us both some heartache. If you can’t handle the evidence that Loki is *not* a fire god, you might want to get out of the kitchen. Not only is he not a fire god, but I accidentally tracked down what his element actually is… and it’s soooo much more powerful. The power. I can feel it. It runs through me. Inhale. Exhale.
Also, I had to address the debate between scholars about his being a fire god or not… and how the heathen and pagan community treat the belief that he’s a fire god. Furthermore, I might have mentioned that his being a fire god is a CHRISTIAN conclusion brought into things NOT by Snorri. And I had to be a scholar about it, because this paper isn’t just for us, which means I had to talk like I was on the outside. If you can’t handle that, you may also want to get out of the dining room.
You are welcome to read this early copy. So I’m putting this out TEMPORARILY for a few days for you. It has typos, but that’s a fact of my life. Please read it, or don’t. It uses a lot of words, but I tried to be entertaining as is my wont. It only contains a fraction of my research. But once I got past this, the facts lined themselves up. I just have to type them down now.
If you read it, don’t forget the footnotes! Pratchett is a muse.
