So a piece of the piece of the That Læ-ing Loki Project ended up being separated and fleshed out. The goal? I was going to submit it to the Heathen Journal, but when this slice of the slice got too big I turned to the Saga Book. Well, I’m a member of the Viking Historical Society and have often enjoyed the fruits of their labors so they were the more logical choice at any rate.

And then I realized something was wrong with my submission after I’d submitted it, so I ended up working even more on the slice of the slice. And now I have…

…a paper about Loki’s shoes.

And through that bit of research my personal opinion on Loki changed even more than it had already. God of Chaos? Well, aside from the fact that the Norse gods aren’t exactly gods of, well, anything there’s no way I can fit “God of Chaos” into what the texts have delivered to me. God of change, yes. Associated with the dead, definitely. Tied to the gifts afforded the barrow, I can not deny. Chaos? No. Fire? No. Trickery in the pop culture sense? No. Definitely not.

But I can’t talk about all of my findings yet. I’m working on it, though, and if you agree great. If you don’t, great. But please at least listen to my argument. There’s lore in there. There’s Norse culture in there. And I’m finding all of this because I’m chasing down… not the Norse pagan way of life, but something older. Much older, that the Norse seemed to have remembered but were forgetting by the time things were written down.

For now, this paper is up for a select few to read. But before you read a single word, allow me to give you the opening disclaimer to the project itself: I’m irreverent on purpose. I try to entertain, and I use plain language (mostly). It’s my skaldic duty. I have gallows humor, which IMHO is appropriate when dealing with a god of the barrow… and I won’t stop just because you say so.
